A few weeks ago, in my ASA, (Ask Sai Anything), I was asked a very interesting question as to why women leaders needed exclusive programs. Isn’t it enough for women to attend the same programs that are meant for male leaders? Doesn’t this exclusivity create more bias against women?

In this blog, I attempt to answer this question in as much detail as possible:

Why do Women in Leadership Matter?

Although women have been breaking barriers and taking up space in leadership roles, they still face unique challenges that hinder their personal and professional growth. The number of women at the C-suite level in India is dismally low.

In a recently conducted survey by Avatar, a workplace culture consulting group, it was found that only 19% of women leaders occupy C-suite roles in Indian corporations. Soundarya Rajesh, founder-president of Avatar Group, said that their research revealed multiple factors continued to limit the advancement of women to the C-suite.- As reported by Times of India E-paper 27/01/25

From societal expectations and unconscious bias to balancing multiple roles, the route to leadership for women is tougher to navigate as compared to their male counterparts.

Developing Leadership with the Power of Coaching

Some Unique Challenges Faced by Women Leaders

  1. Balancing conflicting expectations: Women are expected to be warm and nurturing, but leadership roles demand assertiveness and decisiveness. If women leaders are seen as too friendly, they may be seen as weak. Being too assertive gets them the tag of being aggressive.
  2. Higher standards but lower rewards: Women leaders most often have to work harder than their male counterparts to prove their competence, but still may receive less recognition, lower pay, or slower promotions. Salary or promotion negotiations are difficult courses to navigate for many women leaders.
  3. Unconscious bias & existing stereotypes: Many workplaces still function with inbuilt biases that believe men are more suited for leadership positions, as men are perceived to be more authoritative. A woman in power is judged more and scrutinized more.
  4. Pressure of work-life balance: Another bias against women is the belief that women are adept at multitasking and managing many things simultaneously. They are presumed to be naturally wired for these aspects. This most often leads to an unfair share of caregiving and familial responsibilities falling on women. This makes it very difficult for women leaders to have demanding leadership roles. 60% of respondents from the Avatar survey are quoted to have said that work-life integration is a major challenge they face.
  5. Everyday bias: Women leaders may face subtle distinctions at the workplace in the form of being interrupted while speaking, their ideas not being heard, or even expected to take on ‘office housework’ like organizing meetings & taking notes.
  6. Limited role models: Not having many role models at the top makes it harder for emerging leaders to envision themselves at the top or generate the self-belief to succeed.

Understanding Women Leadership Programs

Broadly speaking, women leadership programs can be categorized into three types based on the stage of a leader’s career:

  • During the early career years, women leaders often require thrust and motivation to accelerate growth. The programs curated for these purposes create awareness to build the mindset, create a vision for the leaders, and equip them with the required skills that support leaders to take big leaps.
  • Mid-career leadership programs primarily focus on enhancing the leaders’ skills, creating a deeper sense of self-awareness to break internal barriers & amplify emotional intelligence. Navigating the organizational ecosystem with ambition and drive is also focused on.
  • Senior leadership program focuses on women who are already leading teams and are required to refine and grow their executive presence in the boardroom, strategic decision-making, create newer opportunities, stakeholder management & networking.

No matter the level at which women leaders undergo leadership programs, all of them are targeted to achieve the following:

1. Self-awareness and Personal Growth

One of the first steps in leadership is self-awareness. Understanding strengths, weaknesses, areas of improvement, and the individual leadership style allows leaders to navigate challenges more effectively and overcome internal barriers.

Through self-reflection exercises, personality assessments, and coaching, participants gain clarity about their leadership potential and learn how to lead authentically.

2. Communication and Executive Presence

Clarity in communication is the backbone of leadership. Steering through the landscape of difficult & uncomfortable conversations is a challenge many women leaders face daily.  A women’s leadership program provides strategies for influential communication, executive presence, storytelling skills, and negotiation skills.

Women leaders learn to own their narratives, speak with confidence in male-dominated spaces, and communicate their vision effectively.

3. Overcoming Bias and Workplace Challenges

A women leadership program empowers leaders with strategies to navigate and challenge barriers. These include identifying and addressing unconscious biases, building resilience to overcome workplace challenges, and learning self-advocacy skills.

These programs equip women with knowledge and tools to break through impediments and rise to leadership positions.

4. Strategic Leadership and Decision-Making

Leadership is not just about individual success—it’s about driving business outcomes and making impactful decisions for different stakeholders. Strategic thinking, problem-solving frameworks, risk-taking, and innovation all form a part of these programs

By learning these skills, women can confidently lead teams, make high-stakes decisions, and contribute to business growth.

5. Building a Strong Professional Network and Mentorship

Having the right connections and support system is a key contributor to success. Women often miss out on informal networks and mentorship opportunities that are crucial for career advancement. Leadership programs emphasize networking strategies, access to mentors & sponsors, and peer groups. These groups provide a strong scaffolding to the leaders by being a valuable support system.

7. Leading with Purpose and Impact

At the end of the day, leadership is about creating a meaningful change in organizations and communities, along with leaving a lasting legacy.  Women leadership programs encourage participants to define their leadership purpose and use their positions to create environments of diversity, empathy, and integrity. Above all, these programs encourage women to uplift and mentor other women. The impact of these programs is such that they not only help the individual but also provoke the leaders to uplift other women leaders.

8. Navigating Power and Politics

Many women leaders do not see the political chessboard at work and shy away from it.  Learning the office chessboard supports power and politics at work.

Leadership programs provide the required learning for women to build allies at work, through which power can be navigated. By adding value to others’ success stories, women can build personal power. Finding unique ways to use power is an important landscape that can be learned to traverse.
